I generally find more interesting things to talk about.
Except for when food and politics mix. Enter Measure 92.
It is really important. As important as is what is in your food. Literally.
We are talking about Measure 92 coming up on the November Oregon statewide ballot.
It is the Oregon Mandatory Labeling of GMOs Initiative.
This measure would mandate labeling foods that were produced with or contain genetically
modified organisms a.k.a. GMOs.
Right now, you may not know what is in your food.
Why? Because, unlike all of the nations in the European Union, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Russia, and China, the USA currently has no laws requiring labeling genetically modified foods.
There are quite a few large US based corporations that do not want to you know that what you are eating may have come from a lab. That is in spite of the fact that these same corporations are required to label the GMO ingredients in 64 other countries around the world. But, hey, if there is no such law at home, then there is no action required, right?
Ignorance is bliss. But whose bliss is it?
PepsiCo, Hershey Company, the J.M. Smucker Company and so many other large donors currently funding the "No on Measure 92" ads know something they do not want you to know. They do not want YOU to be able to see what is in your food. Even though adding the GMO labeling to their products will cost them absolutely nothing nor will it increase consumer food prices.
GMOs make people sick.
GMOs are now linked to gastrointestinal, immune and reproductive system problems. They are also implicated in organ damage, accelerated aging, mental conditions and autoimmune conditions such as diabetes. That is why thousands of doctors have been prescribing non-GMO diets for years now.
I am not a doctor. I am a nutrition coach.
I do not consume GMOs. I buy my meat and produce directly from my local farmers or certified organic elsewhere. Everyone wanting to avoid consuming GMOs is already able to do just that, argue the opponents of Measure 92. Right? Wrong!
The people who are not able to afford the prices of organic ingredients need the correct information on the label the most.
There is no economic hardship to consumers in requiring large corporations to put more information on product labels. The only thing this will deliver to the consumers is information currently not made available. The power to make choices for themselves. Whether it is to buy a product that contains GMOs or not. Can you guess what it is that the large corporations are really afraid of here?
Measure 92 if not for or against GMOs. It for giving people the correct information. The choice to decide for themselves.
Spread the word.
There is a ton at stake between now and November 4th. Please help Oregon to vote "Yes!" on Measure 92.
If Measure 92 passes in Oregon, it will pave the way for and give hope to the rest of the country. Similar measures have been defeated most recently in California and Washington. By large out-of-state corporations. We do not have to meet them at their level. We simply have to change a small percent of public interest. Do your part. Contribute if you can.
Tell as many people as you know to support the Oregon Measure 92. It matters that it passes. Whether or not you currently reside in Oregon.
